Simpson College Keystone Pipeline

2015-02-06_12-44-06INDIANOLA: The U.S. Senate approved the highly controversial Keystone Pipeline Bill last week. Before its final approval, a few amendments were added including one by U.S. Senator Joni Ernst (R-IA) that changes the route of the Keystone Pipeline which will now run along a new line through the heart of Iowa.

“This amendment will bring good, Iowa valued jobs to our great state” said Ernst. “If the bill passes the U.S. House, I’ll deliver it myself to President Obama’s desk for approval.”

The Acorn has obtained a map of the new route and to the surprise of many, the proposed route of the pipeline will run through the heart of Simpson’s campus. The new Pedestrian Plaza will need to be ripped up in order to place the pipeline beneath it.

To build the pipeline and keep the prices low, Simpson has received a federal grant to offer work-study positions for students to aid in the pipeline’s construction. Responsibilities of these positions will include breaking up the concrete, digging the trench, laying the pipe, installing the sensors, and more. Eventually, Simpson will need students to hang out in the plaza to hand-pump the oil.

Applications are currently being accepted for the Keystone Pipeline work-study positions which will pay the standard $7.25 an hour.

When told about the Keystone Pipeline and the new work-study positions, Nate Wanken, a junior here at Simpson, had this to slur, “I mean, whatever can help keep beer prices low for us college kids. Go Keystone! Bring dat’ pipeline!”

Students wanting to apply for these new work-study positions are to inquire in the business office as soon as possible. If other students are as confused as Nate Wanken, these positions aren’t going to last long.
